The advantages of sunscreen baguettes in architecture

With the implementation of the RE2020 standards, the management of solar gain is essential to the architectural design of new façades. Thanks to a wide selection of sizes and colours, terracotta sunscreen baguettes offer a versatile option. They allow for artistic creativity by cleverly playing with texture, colour and shadow. The possibilities are endless

Not only is this option attractive to look at, but it also provides user comfort. In the architecture of new façades built to RE2020 standards, solar gain must be managed to allow solar light and heat to pass through in winter while ensuring visual and thermal comfort in the summer. The fundamental principle is not to be dazzled by the light intensity or uncomfortable in the heat.

As sunscreen baguettes help to lower the indoor temperature, they should be included in the architecture of façade renovation work. In turn, they will eliminate the need for artificial air conditioning and therefore reduce energy costs.

What is the role of sunscreen baguettes in the RE2020 regulations?

The Réglementation Énergétique 2020 (2020 Energy Regulation), also known as RE2020, is mainly aimed at making buildings as autonomous as possible in terms of energy. As a result, these new constructions use renewable energies such as the sun for heating and to produce their own electricity. To capture the maximum amount of heat and light from the sun's rays, the architecture of these buildings promotes large, glazed openings, especially on façades facing south, west and east. Although highly beneficial in winter, these heat and light gains become particularly uncomfortable when it's hot and sunny.

In force as of 1 January 2022, the RE2020 regulations now include "summer comfort" for all new constructions intended for collective and individual housing, schools, offices and service buildings. Energy-intensive air conditioning systems can now be avoided, as buildings will provide a maximum indoor temperature of between 26°C and 28°C from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm, and 26°C from 10.00 pm to 7.00 am.
