HKS’s response to this huge order was to preserve the soul of the place while, at the same time, projecting it into the future: renovation that remains true to the plant’s historic building, with contemporary blocks added to the “transitional” building, respecting the Brutalist style through an emphasis on mass. Great thought was put into opening up the structures to the outside and creating a spectacular “window” onto the surrounding natural areas. Terracotta was used here as a link between the old materials that were retained and the contemporary elements that were added. Piterak XS rainscreen cladding fits in perfectly with glazed and metal sections through canopy roofing, overhangs, and so on. Its light grey and slate grey shades act as the common thread between the buildings from end to end. There are offices, two restaurants and a new landscaped area for holding public concerts and festivals, but also a parking facility and a giant screen on the North façade for film screenings and concerts. Together, as a unified whole, the buildings fulfil multiple new functions. Architecture clearly demonstrates its ability here to connect the past and future in complete continuity. With terracotta playing a masterly role as the bridge across time.

ProMedica Headquarters
Toledo, in the heart of the Rust Belt, the former industrial heartland of the USA that has suffered economic decline, is now reinventing itself through renovation of its abandoned industrial buildings.
This is the backdrop for the major project carried out by architecture firm HKS that has successfully restored life and meaning to two structurally different buildings, by uniting them to construct the head office of ProMedica, a non-profit healthcare organisation. Firstly, a “transitional” building in the Brutalist style, along the bank of the Maumee River. And behind that, a disused steam plant and its two immense stacks.

InterviewJoseph Werla, Vice-President of HKS
“We’ve reused materials originally present on site and terracotta bricks, in particular, inside the building. So, there is clay covering the upper walls of the social areas, together with two other noble materials, the wood of the footbridges and the exposed metal on structural elements and window surrounds. The use of natural materials such as terracotta is one of the biomimetic design strategies we have implemented in this project.
