Sponsoring conservation of the château of La Salvetat Saint-Gilles

In 2019 and 2020, TERREAL, a sponsor of the Fondation du Patrimoine, donated 630m2 of roofing for the conservation of the château of La Salvetat Saint-Gilles, an emblem of the Toulouse region.

Contexte

The medieval château of La Salvetat Saint-Gilles, located 16km from Toulouse, had been deteriorating for decades. Acquired by the town hall for a symbolic 1 euro in December 2016, the château was in a state of ruin, with the roof in particular threatening to collapse due to severe storms. Emblematic of the Toulouse region, this site is one of the 270 projects selected in 2018 for the heritage lottery run by the Stéphane Bern Heritage Mission.

TERREAL has been a sponsor of the Fondation du Patrimoine for many years.

In 2019 and 2020, through a donation of 630 m2 of brown-black Pompadour roof tiles in the Historical Monuments range, the Group participated in the conservation of the château of La Salvetat-Saint-Gilles, an emblem of the Toulouse region and one of the 270 projects selected for the heritage lottery run by the Stéphane Bern Heritage Mission.

An atypical structure, the château bore the marks of several historical periods, with painted floors dating from the 17th century. In a state of ruin, the roof threatened to collapse due to severe storms.

This is a major salvage project with an estimated total duration of three years.

Focus on our philosophy of responsible product innovation rooted in ancestral traditions:

To manufacture new roof tiles, trying to put the soul of ancestral know-how into them, to recreate the patina of the passing of time, by vitrifying powders, or finely sanding the surface of the tiles, while benefiting from the guarantees provided by our current processes and thus making the structures sustainable. It is because we feel responsible for the mission of designing tomorrow’s horizons, while taking care to respect yesterday’s traditions, that we have developed ranges of flat tiles and canal tiles so that they can make a lasting contribution to beautiful projects for the conservation of the regions’ architectural heritage, as was also the case in another sponsorship of the Abbey of Lagrasse in the Aude region which has been ongoing since 2008.

This is how a brown-black Pompadour tile from the “Historical Monuments” range, mainly intended for the restoration of roofs of old buildings and exceptional residences, and coming from a tile factory that has existed since the late 19th century, caught the eye of Mr De Rebière, Chief Architect of Bâtiments de France, and of Mr Arderiu, Mayor of La Salvetat Saint-Gilles.
