The slope of these roofs is further accentuated by the extension of the Volnay tiles down the façade, without any demarcation, the gutters having been removed in favour of rainwater recovery at the foot of the façade. The Corten steel of the window surrounds, which creates an overhang, randomly breaks up the regularity of the façade, as well as its colour, providing aesthetic and tonal contrast between the slate colour of the roofing tiles and the striking orange of the steel. For a unique, vibrant and warm complex that fully embodies the term “home”.
Sarlat , France
Foyer de vie les Pechs
On a hillside near Sarlat, in a protected area, nestles a highly discreet complex. Fully clad in terracotta roofing tiles and wooden rainscreen cladding, the Résidence Les Pechs aims to be at one with this wooded, natural and specially preserved landscape. This project to establish a residential home for adults with disabilities that can accommodate forty people year-round was born of that desire for it to blend perfectly into its surroundings. There was also a need to skilfully manage the scale of the buildings to successfully integrate a large structure of more than 2700 m2, into a residential area, while ensuring that the majority of the home was on one level. The architects of the Coq Lefrancq agency called upon the collective imagination of the home to overcome this challenge, designing the area like a small hamlet: divided units, a relatively limited height and, above all, gable roofs with a simple shape, creating the reassuring impression of entering your own home.

The symbolic power of the roofing tile
The word of
Coq Le Francq, Architect
Interview“From the start of the project, we not only involved the building’s managers, but also its future residents, who will live there all their lives. These residents required muted, soft colours and raw, real materials that they find calming. It is not just the visual aspects, but also the tactile ones that ensure their well-being. Terracotta offers the perfect solution to this challenge, both in terms of the shade chosen (slate) and its intrinsic naturalness. These roofing tiles also allowed us to meet the challenges posed by a project covered by Bâtiments de France: they are ideal for roofs in the Périgord Noir with relatively steep slopes. We revisited this feature a little by extending the tiles down the façade, using very simple shapes, but moving slightly away from the traditional portfolio. This provided a more contemporary look, while also addressing the issues of cost and maintenance. We often work with roofing tiles, but these are usually small clay tiles. In this case, the scale of the buildings demanded larger tiles, which is where the Volnay came in.”
