Indeed, its façades clad in Terreal iridescent ceramic terracotta rainscreens create a surprise by revealing reflections that are in turn blueish or metallic ivories depending on the weather conditions. An exceptional finish... despite the significant architectural restrictions.
How to showcase 173 studio apartments and manage the integration of almost 400 windows in the façade without falling into the trap of austere repetition with no focus on aesthetics? Such is the challenge met by the PERIPHERIQUES Architects agency, who has succeeded with panache in rejuvenating the immigrant workers’ hostel built in 1978.
In order to bring the façade to life and create relief, the architects worked in partnership with the Terreal façade teams to develop three “notched” rainscreen profiles. Bespoke products designed around a standard reference from the Terreal range: the Zéphir Evolution, for which the mounting system is proven. All the same height, 22.5 cm, the surfaces of these unique parts have between one and three areas that are sloped at different angles. This offers an exceptional playing field to the light, creating an impression of vibrancy from the constant reflection. This effect is reinforced by the ceramic and iridescent finish of the terracotta, obtained through the close collaboration of Terreal with a ceramics artisan workshop.

If there is a field in which we are able to showcase creativity and innovation, it’s façade installations! Here, we wanted highly stylised lines that connect with each other and contradict each other while working on the movement of the skyline and the dynamics of the façade surface. Therefore, the relief of the rainscreens and their iridescent ceramic glazed create changing reflections that bring the building to life: the façade vibrates with the light.
Terreal showed a genuine interest in developing new expertise and products and joined us in our research without hesitation. This is something that we have obviously appreciated greatly. It was a great pleasure to work with such innovative specialists! We were only able to obtain a façade prototype of this quality thanks to the involvement and collaboration of all project stakeholders: Terreal, the ceramics artisans and the installers. And it is this motivation that has enabled us to make our projects a fantastic success!
