Arranged lengthwise, the Claude Debussy residence is made up of stacked terraced houses forming two large bands, punctuated at their ends by three plots of multi-family housing, with four storeys and seven storeys. A unique architectural example with great heritage value that was worth conserving...but was also worth reinvigorating, particularly with the creation of gardens, together with beautification and insulation of the facades. So as to affirm the identity of this unusual grouping, the three most visible volumes were clad in terracotta, creating a dialogue with the openwork orange brick walls that run along the edge of the houses. There was a desire for continuity, but also an ambition to contrast with the existing structures, so as to create depth in the residence. Combined in an ingenious manner, the white and brown bricks thereby create a pixelated vibratory design. This surge of pigment is nonetheless delicate, achieved thanks to an extremely precise gradation of colorimetric density. Five brick-by-brick designs were created in advance, as templates to be followed in the factory for the prefabrication of the terracotta + insulation panels, then assembled on-site. The final brushstroke for this masterpiece: the grey joints deliberately contrast with the brick module so as to further highlight its sovereign presence. All in the art of restoration.
Trappes , France
Debussy residence
Guided by a minutely detailed play of chromatic gradation, the eye travels along the facade until it reaches the sky... An aesthetic feat bearing the hallmark of Des Contours Architectes, the agency tasked with renovating this housing complex of 211 dwellings, built in Trappes, in the Parisian suburbs, during the 1980s.

InterviewSarah Martin and Bertrand Bahuaud, associated architects at Des Contours
Showing the brick, playing with its presence, is almost commonplace. It is such a beautiful material! Terracotta makes it possible to create rich and lively facades, thanks especially to the many finishes available: textured, smooth, glazed, hand-moulded, matte, gloss, etc. The colour palettes are also being constantly expanded. That is what is great about brick: it is never the same in the end; its look depends on the project! It is also a material with a high level of durability and which makes it possible, due to its format, to give large-scale residential groupings a domestic scale. We often make use of it in our projects. Terreal? The company is a long-standing partner that always provides us with excellent support and easily supplies us with samples. We regularly dive into the manufacturer's terracotta inspiration mood board, which shows, through the projects realised by our counterparts, the devices and ornamental features that can be achieved with terracotta. This is a great source of inspiration for us, a starting point for reflection. In short, it is a really useful tool that we always have to hand!”
